The Greater Kansas City Branch of ECBC is one of the branches that make up the Heartland Chinchilla Group today.
The branch originally came to be a branch organized within the National Chinchilla Breeders of America, Inc. (NCBA).
On Saturday, December 3, 1949, at the Aladdin Hotel in Kansas City, Missouri,
Mr. W.C. Olson, NCBA President, conducted
an organizational meeting of the Greater Kansas City Branch. Officers were elected as follows: Mr. C.A. Brock, president;
Miss Maxine Selsor, vice president; Mr. Howard Shryock, recording secretary; Mrs. Willard Engels, corresponding secretary;
Dr. Walter J. Devine, treasurer; Mr. James E Combs, national delegate; and Mrs. Olle. E. Erickson, alternate delegate.
The branch was an outgrowth of the Kansas-Missouri Club.
The Greater Kansas City Branch was officially recognized for
charter on January 18, 1950.
In the beginning years of the branch, membership totaled around 45 members. Meetings were held monthly in Kansas City, Kansas. A decade later the branch still held monthly meetings, changing to another location in Kansas City, Missouri. The branch also held their own shows in Kansas City, Missouri.
The branch has seen many fine members over the years, including Dr. A.E. Schumacher, who held office nationally in NCBA and revolutionized using the umbrella stave for pelting, and also Doug Wilson, who became known for his award-winning mutations.
Today, the branch operates within the Empress Chinchilla Breeders Cooperative (ECBC) and as a branch within the Heartland Chinchilla Group. Although membership is lower in numbers than the beginning days of operation, the branch still maintains a very active role within ECBC and the Heartland Chinchilla Group, participating and helping with shows, offices and committees. The branch hosts meetings and get-togethers on a regular basis throughout the year, as well as participating in ECBC and Heartland organized events.
